Is This a Bad Sign?
No—mild soreness or temporary inflammation is usually a sign that the body is adapting and healing. However, if pain is severe or persists beyond a few days, it’s worth adjusting EMS settings or checking for underlying issues.

Increased Blood Flow & Oxygenation
EMS enhances circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to damaged nerve & muscle tissues. This reduces inflammation and helps remove metabolic waste, creating an optimal
healing environment.
Stimulation of Nerve Growth Factors (NGFs)
EMS promotes the release of nerve growth factors (NGFs) such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). These proteins help repair damaged neurons and support the regeneration of axons (nerve fibers).
Activation of Neuromuscular Pathways
By stimulating nerve-muscle connections, EMS prevents muscle atrophy and reinforces neuromuscular pathways, even in cases of nerve compression or injury. This keeps communication between nerves and muscles intact, accelerating functional recovery.
Mitochondrial & ATP Production Boost
EMS has been shown to enhance mitochondrial function and ATP production (the body's energy currency). ATP is critical for cell repair, helping neurons regenerate and function more efficiently.
Reduction of Oxidative Stress & Inflammation
Nerve damage often triggers excessive oxidative stress and inflammation, which can slow recovery. EMS has been linked to reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress, protecting cells from further damage.
Improved Myelin Sheath Repair
For damaged nerves to regain proper
function, they must rebuild the myelin sheath—the protective covering around nerve fibers. EMS supports myelin repair by promoting Schwann cell activation, which is essential for nerve regeneration.
Pain Modulation via the Gate Control Theory
EMS can block pain signals from reaching the brain by activating large-diameter afferent nerve fibers. This reduces pain perception, allowing for better movement and muscle activation without discomfort.
Muscle Re-Education & Functional Recovery
EMS helps reactivate muscles, restore coordination, and prevent compensation patterns that might delay healing.
Deep Muscle Activation – EMS engage shard-to-reach stabilizing muscles, reducing imbalances that contribute to back and joint compression.
Increased Blood Flow – Stimulated circulation helps reduce inflammation and promote healing in affected areas.
Pain Relief & Nerve Stimulation – Gentle electrical impulses can block pain signals and encourage neuromuscular re-education, aiding in nerve function recovery.
Low-Impact Strengthening – WB-EMS allows clients to strengthen core and postural muscleswithout high-impact movement that could aggravate symptoms.
What toe xpect when using your EMPULSE TOTAL BODY SUIT with sciatica and nerve related concerns.
An EMPULSE TOTAL BODY EMS session is a powerful healing tool when it comes to nerve and inflammation related issues.
When youchoose a 20 Minute full body workout active session or even a BREATHE passivesession, you should expect temporary inflammation and soreness potentiallyafter your EMS session, especially when stimulating areas affected by nervedamage, such as in sciatica recovery.
Here’s why: Why EMS May Cause Temporary Inflammation & Soreness
Increased Blood Flow & Cellular Activity
◦ EMS boosts circulation and increases metabolic activity in the treated area.
◦ This process can cause temporary swelling or mild inflammation, similar to what happens after strength training.
Micro-Trauma to Muscles & Nerves
◦ Just like resistance training, EMS triggers small amounts of stress in muscles and nerve tissues.
◦ This can activate inflammatory responses that help repair and strengthen the neuromuscular system.
Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)
◦ If EMS is applied at a high intensity or to underactive muscles, the body may react with DOMS.
◦ This is the same soreness felt after a workout and usually subsides within 24-72hours.
Nerve Regeneration & Sensory Changes
◦ As nerves begin to heal and reconnect, tingling, burning, or temporary dis comfort may occur.
◦ This is part of the healing process and often resolves as nerve function improves.
Use your TOTAL BODY DEVICE passive sessions (ie: our 10 minute Massage or Lymphatic programs) to aid in the recovery process.

Using a medical-grade full body EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) suit can produce a variety of sensations and experiences in the first 24 to 48 hours. Here are some common effects you might notice as a healthy individual:
Mild Discomfort: Some users report tingling during the initial use of the suit, especially if they are not accustomed to EMS technology--the BRAIN requires 2-7 minutes to grow accustomed to the sensation the first time you use the suit! This should diminish as you get used to the sensation and your body will crave your next sessions.
Emotional Effects: A mixed collection of feelings--You'll feel "alive" and a sense of utter relaxation all at the same time. Depending on the settings used, you may feel a sense of relaxation during or after the session, especially if the EMS is used for recovery purposes.
Muscle Contraction: You will probably feel your muscles contracting involuntarily during the session. This is a normal response to the electrical stimulation.
Fatigue: After your session, you may experience muscle fatigue or soreness, similar to what you might feel after a vigorous workout. This is usually temporary and should subside within a day or two. You should have your BEST NIGHT OF SLEEP! Lean into the sleep for recovery!
Increased Blood Circulation: The EMS suit can enhance blood flow to the muscles being stimulated. You may notice a feeling of warmth or increased circulation in those areas.
Potential Muscle Soreness: If you are using the EMS suit for the first time or at a higher intensity, you might experience delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in the days following your session. Use our passive recovery programs to assist in reducing any soreness.
Hydration Needs: You might feel thirstier than usual, as muscle stimulation can increase metabolic activity. Staying hydrated is important.
Improved Mobility: Some users report an immediate improvement in muscle activation and mobility post-session. This may not be universal but can occur, especially if your muscles were previously tight.
It's essential to listen to your body and contact our expert training team with any concerns of severe discomfort or adverse effects.
Additionally, following the EMPULSE TOTAL BODY usage guidelines ensure success-- or your healthcare provider can help ensure a positive experience.
Use your EMPULSE TOTAL BODY suit as an effective way to help alleviate muscle soreness after your workout, or on days following your workout. Here are several steps and tips for using your EMS suit to aid recovery:
Timing of Use
- Post-Workout: Use the EMS suit immediately after your workout session to promote recovery and reduce muscle soreness. We love our 10 Minute Massage programs found in our REST & RESTORE PROGRAM SUITE. Use RELAX in your ESSENTIALS PROGRAM SUITE as well. You can do two passive relaxing recovery programs post your 20 minute workout.
- Rest Days: You can also use it on rest days to facilitate recovery and maintain muscle activation. Use your EMPULSE suit on the days that you're experiencing soreness to help activate the body to reduce soreness.
Settings and Intensity
- When using your passive recovery programs--Adjust the intensity: Start with a low intensity and gradually increase it to a comfortable level. It should feel like a gentle contraction/or tissue stimulation, not painful.
Duration of Use
- Frequency: You can use your EMPULSE SUIT daily for 40 minutes, depending on your workout schedule and how your body feels. We recommend doing a 20 minute BUILD, BURN, CARDIO or BREATHE program followed by up to 2 recovery programs (such as Sports Massage or our Lymphatic or Cellulite Program)
Target Areas
- Focus on Sore Muscles: Use the EMS on specific muscle groups that are sore or fatigued. For example, if you've done a leg workout, focus on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves by increasing the focus on those muscle groups on your APP. We love the IPAD & ANDROID APPS best when adjusting your intensity by muscle group or area.
Hydration and Nutrition are of major importance.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after using the EMS suit to help flush out toxins and support muscle recovery.
- Post-Workout Nutrition: Ensure you’re consuming enough protein and nutrients to aid muscle repair.
Combine your EMS training with Other Recovery Techniques
- Stretching: Incorporate gentle stretching before and after using the EMS suit to enhance flexibility and reduce tightness.
- Foam Rolling: Consider using a foam roller to further release muscle tension before or after your EMS sessions.
ALWAYS Listen to Your Body
- Monitor Your Response: Pay attention to how your body responds to the EMS treatment. If you experience increased discomfort or pain, reduce the intensity or duration, or consult our expert trainers using our calendly app on http://www.empusetotalbody.com.
-- the TRAINERS PAGE under the section: Your suit comes with TWO training sessions, or contact us at customercare@empulsetotalbody.com or call 1-833-EMPULSE.
When usedcorrectly, an EMS suit can be a valuable tool for alleviating muscle sorenessand enhancing recovery. Make sure to adjust the settings based on your comfort and needs, and combine the EMPULSE TOTAL BODY SUIT use with other recovery strategies for optimal results.
